German Pinschers - Breed History

German Pinschers originated in Germany. In his native country, the German Pinscher was used as a ratter, a hunter of rodents and vermin. The word pinscher indicates the way of grasping or catching, as the dog uses paws for catching vermin.

At the early stages of the breed development, the liters had both smooth coated and wire-coated puppies. Gradually, only smooth coated German Pinschers were selected for breeding. It was agreed upon in 1895, when the Pinscher-Schnauzer Club was founded. The German Pinscher was officially recognized as a separate breed in the same year.

The Doberman Pinscher is considered a larger version of the German Pinscher breed. Louis Doberman took a liking to elegance and temperament of the breed and used the genes of these dogs to develop Doberman Pinschers.

In 1950s, German Pinschers were on the edge of extinction. The First and the Second World Wars caused the diminishing of the breed. Werner Yung is claimed to have found some of these dogs that were left in Germany at that time and applied a serious breeding program to them.

The first breed standard was written in 1884. In 1895, it was revised. The breed is still considered to be very rare in Europe. There are few serious breeders in Germany and even fewer in other countries. The UKC recognized the breed in 1991. The AKC fully recognized German Pinschers into the Working group in 2003.
